North Biblical Counseling FAQ

What kind of counseling does the North Campus provide?
The type of counseling we provide is called Biblical Counseling. Biblical counseling is a rich, robust, heart-transformative conversation between a counselor and a hurting individual, couple, or group.

We use the Bible to enlighten both the content of our counsel and the methodology by which we practice. We believe that the Bible speaks into every area of our lives, particularly the painful areas. While God’s word isn’t an instruction manual on how to handle every possible scenario, it ultimately points us to a relationship with Jesus Christ, the One who also suffered, walks with us in the midst of our suffering, and promises to one day make all things new.

Note: For more information about our approach to counseling, see Bethlehem’s “Guiding Philosophy for Counseling.

What are some of the struggles commonly addressed in counseling?
Here at the North Campus we provide counseling for a range of struggles including marital difficulties, depression, anxiety, broken relationships, anger, sexual struggles, guilt, shame, parenting difficulties, etc. If for some reason we don’t have experience in your area of struggle, we will be happy to connect you with a trusted area counselor while also considering ways the church can support and care for you.

Who can come for counseling?
Right now, we’re only able to offer counseling for regular attendees and members here at Bethlehem’s North Campus.  We understand a regular attender to be someone who has consistently participated in the worship and life of the church for at least three months.

Is there a cost to receive counseling?
No. This is a ministry to the North Campus church family, so we currently do not charge for it.

When does counseling take place and how long does it last?
Counseling takes place at the North Campus during daytime hours Monday through Thursday, as well as during the evenings on Monday and Wednesday. Counseling sessions generally meet weekly and last between 60–90 minutes. The duration of counseling typically lasts between 3–6 months but can be shorter or longer as needed.

Note: Due to the demand, there may be a wait list ranging from 2–6 weeks before counseling begins.

Who does the counseling?
At the North Campus, we have both “Lead Counselors” and “Counselors” who are equipped to provide biblical counsel.  Lead Counselors have completed a degree in biblical counseling or Master’s level coursework and Counselors have completed a series of classes, mentoring, and supervised counseling experience while at Bethlehem.

Note: Because we offer Biblical Counseling, our counselors are neither trained nor licensed as psychotherapists or mental health professionals. Additionally, we do not provide medical, legal, or financial advice, but we are willing to collaborate with such professionals as well as we help you consider their counsel in light of Scripture.

What sort of commitments are involved to participate in counseling?
We ask each counselee to make the following commitments ...

  • Arrive to appointments on time and remain consistent in your counseling attendance.
  • Continue your commitment as a regular attendee or member of Bethlehem’s North Campus by attending Sunday worship services at Bethlehem’s North Campus and investing in the life of the church throughout the counseling process.
  • Allow others from Bethlehem to be involved in your life during the counseling process to provide additional support and encouragement. This may include participation in a small group / Sunday School class or having someone directly attend your counseling sessions.
  • Spend time in prayer and Bible reading throughout each week.
  • Complete all assigned homework and come prepared to each counseling session.
