Sermon Discussion Questions: Divorce and Remarriage

Jason Meyer

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

The following discussion questions have been prepared to accompany the sermon on September 9 “Divorce and Remarriage” (1 Corinthians 7:8–16). The questions can be used for discussion in small groups or for personal reflection.

Outline

  1. Unmarried and Widows: Stay as you are (1 Corinthians 7:8–9)
  2. Married - General Principle: Stay as you are (1 Corinthians 7:10–11)
  3. Married - Specific Situations: What if you are married to an unbeliever? (1 Corinthians 7:12–16)

Discussion Questions

  • In Paul’s counsel to people in various settings, what is Paul’s main refrain throughout this section?
  • What does Paul say Christians should do if they are married to a non-Christian?
  • What does Paul mean when he says a brother or sister is not “enslaved” if a non-Christian spouse abandons the marriage? What are the two main views on this meaning?
  • Why do some people believe that abuse is grounds for divorce?

Application Questions

  • How has the issue of divorce and remarriage affected you? How has the issue affected you personally, your family, or your close friends?
  • What is your assessment of the elders’ proposed change to the relational commitments?
  • Why does the supremacy of Christ shine even in our response to abuse?

Prayer Focus
Pray for a grace to reflect deeply upon Paul’s words about divorce and remarriage. Pray for a grace to relate in charitable ways with others who see it differently.
